Nepal: Saurya Airline Plane Catches Fire and Crashes; 18 Dead
In a shocking accident, a Saurya Airline plane carrying maintenance crew and airline staff seems like it stalled just after take off and caught fire as it crashed killing 18 passengers on board. The Captain MR Shakya is said to be in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment at KMC Hospital in Sinamangal.
The plane was flying from Kathmandu airport to the new Pokhara airport with flight code NAME 9 departing at 11.11 am on Wednesday morning.
Several videos have surfaced online showing the horrific moments that the plane veers to the right and crashes into the ground on the East side of the runway.
Among those dead are 1 citizen from Yemen.
The cause of the crash is as yet unknown but the plane in question was supposed to go for maintenance in a month as per statements of an airport official. Kathmandu airport was closed immediately following the incident and regular traffic is expected to resume in the coming hours.
